So it’s been a year since I’ve posted to my blog and that’s been much too long. After sorting through some issues with my last host, I’ve finally found a new one that should be here to stay! As part of getting Wordpress back up, I’ve been messing around with the layout of things.

Because I’ve been working on websites for tons of people lately, I’ve had the need to post my portfolio of previous work somewhere so I figured what better place than here? That being said, this will move more away from being a personal blog to being a business portfolio and personal connection center. Personal connection center can be defined as ‘everything *Ian* online’, hopefully organized in a meaningful way so my friends can keep up on my happenings/whereabouts/etc. I will post more when new things are rolled out so keep in touch!

Was in a creative mood the other night and came up with an excellent drink to enjoy on these nice and warm summer days. I call it a Spring Splash.

Spring Splash

Soak any non-flavored vodka in freshly cut strawberries and a cup of sugar overnight.

In a Boston Shaker, add ice and 1pt Bacardi O, and 1pt of the Strawberry-Soaked Vodka. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds.

Add 1.5 oz of the mixed liqueur to a chilled martini glass (rimmed with sugar if you want to be fancy).

Add 2.5 oz of Minute Maid Lemonade.

Top with a splash of “Splash” (AKA V8 Splash, pick your flavor: I like the Mango one) and two drops of fresh (if you can) lime juice.

Garnish with a strawberry and serve.

It sounds like a hard drink to make, but it's very easy and EXTREMELY tasty! I whipped this drink up for a little pre-funk before we headed out, I had 4 of them and was feeling pretty decent. Enjoy……..and drink responsibly. hehe

Hey kids,

I’ve got a new ‘feature’ here at wifigod.net, a Tumblelog. “What is a Tumblelog?” you might ask. Well, it’s really like a variation of a blog, but shorter. It’s just random mixed-media updates that I would like to share with you guys and not go through the hassle of posting a big blog post. It’s easier for me, and hopfeully more entertaining for you. It’s setup to host my latest Flickr uploads, along with my most recently Dugg news and videos. I will also be sharing streamed music that I enjoy and hope you will listen and like what you hear. Every once in a while I might post a quote or a convo I had on AIM/MSN.

You will not be able to make comments on any of my posts on my Tumblelog, so if you want to give me any feedback or discuss a post, either email me or post a comment on one of my journal entries! Anywho, that’s all for now, I know it’s been a while since I’ve posted. Don’t worry, lot’s more to come in the very near future!

As this site is barely over a week old, I decided to get a preliminary “taste” of what the search engines think about my site’s rank with the keyword: wifigod. The 4 search engines I decided to use were: Google, Yahoo!, MSN Live, and Altavista.

Results:

Google: 7th place. (Not bad, but not the best.)

Yahoo!: 1st place. (Yahoo! may just become my fav search engine again!)

MSN Live: N/A (What a JOKE this search engine is! Not only was I not in the top 10, but I wasn’t even in the search results! Which is also interesting seems how there were only 23 results. Google had over 900 results, Yahoo! 300.)

Altavista: 3rd place. (Too bad nobody uses Altavista anymore!)

Extended Results:

Google: Out of the top 10 results: 1,2,5,6,7,8,9 were profiles or sites of mine. 3 and 4 were comments/forum posts I had made, and 10 was a page quoting my blog.

Yahoo!: Out of the top 10 results: 1,2,3,4,6,9,10 were profiles of sites of mine. 5 and 7 were comments/forum posts I had made, and number 8 was something that didn’t relate to me at all.

MSN Live: Out of the top 10 results: 4 was a profile of mine. 1,2,8, and 10 were comments/forum posts of mine. 3 and 6 were not me and 5, 7, and 9 were sites quoting pages of mine or linking to pages of mine. (Horrible)

Altavista: Out of the top 10 results: 1,2,3,5,6, and 10 were profiles or sites of mine. 7 and 8 were comments/forum posts, 9 was not me, and 4 was a site linking to mine.

These results were interesting, not quite what I had expected. Thank God Yahoo! is the number one site on the net, because that’s the number one site linking to me. Google in a distant 3rd…..come on Google, update your indexes! This little exercise sealed my loathing for Microsoft Live search, beta or not, it’s a piece of garbage. Anywho, hope I didn’t bore you too much with all those stats!

So, I posted earlier about how I had upgraded my Myspace profile. What I didn’t notice, was that my profile was semi-broke in Firefox. After TONS of research, I figured out the problem. Apparently there’s a bug in Firefox that doesn’t like it when a DIV with overflow:auto is activated along with a Flash object that has the param wmode=transparent. Why it has this bug, I don’t know, but I did check Bugzilla and it seems to be documented by a few different users, although nobody’s currently working on the problem. *Sigh* So much for Open Source fixing bugs quickly (this has been documented as a bug since 1.0.5 and possibly earlier).

With that bug fixed, I went ahead and replaced one of my Flash widgets that showed different sites I was on. Seems how Myspace disabled links from Flash objects, it was kind of worthless. I went ahead and replaced the widget with a static HTML version and customized it a little bit. Works like a charm!

So I got bored after finishing my profile last night and decided to look around for some Web 2.0 sites that I’ve been hearing about, but haven’t joined. And so it started…..since then, I’ve joined a bajillion (probably not a word) sites and who knows how many I’ll actually use. The good news is, a lot of them are start to support OpenID now, so at least I don’t have to fill in a bunch of info each time.

Some notables:

Del.icio.us - Everybody and their mother has this, but I was reluctant. I mean, with Digg and Google Bookmarks, why would I need this? Turns out it has some pretty nice features that I might capitalize on in the future.

Twitter - Now I told myself I wasn’t going to ever join this site, but meh, I did. It’s not too bad though, I just hope I don’t get hooked. For those of you who don’t know, it’s basically a site where you can update your status, from anywhere.

Jyte - Had heard about this one from somebody, don’t remember who. Started by some OSU Alum, so I figured it was worth a look. Interesting concept, you post “Claims” and people can either support that claim, or not. You can also give people “Cred” by basically posting a Claim about them. Fun site, lacking some design, but interesting enough to make you use it.

Zooomr - Basically a Flickr competitor, but better. Flickr’s been pissing me off as of late, especially after the Yahoo! acquisition. Zooomer allows more storage space for free users and has better tools. Plus, the company was started by an 18 yr old, so that immediately gets my support.

Be sure and let me know if any of you guys are members of these sites, I’ll add you as a friend!
